We know risks of distracted driving; what about insurance impact?

On behalf of Mansell, Engel & Cole | Apr 5, 2017 | Insurance Disputes

If you are reading this blog post, it is probable you are reading it on your cell phone. People use their phones for all kinds of daily activities such as logging steps, listening to music, navigating to lunch, reading the news and even getting legal advice.

The convenience of cell phones doesn’t take away from their dangers. In fact, if you are reading this on your phone, make sure you aren’t behind the wheel at the same time. If you are doing so, you may be contributing to the reason why your car insurance rate has likely increased.

From a safety perspective, cell phone use while driving reportedly has led to motor vehicle accidents in Oklahoma and throughout the nation. Distracted driving can be as dangerous as drunk driving. Considering almost everyone has a phone, the reality is, however, distracted driving is a likelier risk in terms of everyday safety.

Safety, of course, is an important enough reason to address distracted driving, but as insurance lawyers, it is more relevant to address the insurance impact of behaviors like texting while driving. With more accidents because of distracted driving, insurance companies need to make up for the cost of those cases.

In your household, this could mean a consistent increase in your auto insurance premiums. When you are paying more every year for insurance, you want to be even more confident that your insurance provider won’t deny any accident claims and hold them accountable if they do deny you.

Have you and your property been injured in a distracted driving accident? If your insurance provider is making life more difficult during an already difficult time, work with an insurance attorney who can take on your fight for coverage.
