Appealing a denied claim? How to increase your chance at success

On behalf of Mansell, Engel & Cole | Jul 10, 2020 | Denied Insurance Claims

Your insurance provider denied your claim. Do not feel discouraged—many insurers deny perfectly valid claims the first time around. Now, you are preparing to file an appeal and you are wondering how to maximize your likelihood of success. These are some helpful tips that you can refer to when you need to win an insurance appeal.

Tips you can use during your appeal

Every insurance claim is different, as is every appeal. The circumstances of your case are unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach that every applicant should take. However, you can use these handy tips to strengthen your appeal:

  • Gather extensive paperwork

You will need as much evidence as you can get. It never hurts to gather more paperwork than you think you need. Compile your doctors’ notes, referrals, medical history and anything else that might be relevant.

  • Use good communication

It can feel frustrating to speak to insurance representatives. You often have to spend a lot of time on call waiting, only to have someone answer who seems to know little about your personal details. However, try to remain polite. Communicate as effectively as you can to expedite your case. This can also make an ally on the other end of the phone.

  • Watch the deadlines

Time is of the essence in insurance cases. If you miss a deadline or statute of limitations, it could derail your case entirely. Act swiftly to make sure that you complete your appeal on time.

  • Work with an attorney

Having a lawyer on your side can prove extremely effective. Retaining a lawyer signals to your insurer that you are serious about recovering the compensation that you deserve. Your lawyer will help you understand your legal options, navigate the law and avoid errors. For a successful appeal, this can prove invaluable.
